As COVID-19 Spreads, Chao, McConnell and Kavanaugh go to KY

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Just when you thought the Trump administration might be starting to grasp the seriousness of the global pandemic COVID-19, think again. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, and Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh took a joy ride to Kentucky to go to a signing in ceremony for their political ally — instead of staying in Washington and focusing on the pandemic.

Restore Public Trust director Lizzy Price made the following statement:

“Senate Majority Leader McConnell should be working around the clock on coronavirus legislation, not palling around with his political buddies at non-essential public events. Secretary Chao should be concerned with how the Department of Transportation can help alleviate the spread of the virus, not getting on a plane for the same event.

“There are lives at stake, but McConnell and Chao, whose paychecks are taxpayer-funded, have made it clear that they don’t consider the COVID-19 pandemic to be their first priority.”

According to The Wall Street Journal, Elaine Chao made “callous” comments in a White House meeting on the pandemic, focusing on the economic impacts of restricting travel into the U.S., instead of focusing on halting the spread.

From the Louisville Courier Journal:

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh is visiting Louisville Friday to speak at a special event for U.S. District Judge Justin Walker, The Courier Journal has learned.

The associate justice landed sometime Thursday, according to a source aware of the flight, who asked for anonymity to speak freely. Kavanaugh is in town to speak at Walker’s investiture, which is a ceremonial signing in of judges.

Kavanaugh was joined on the flight into Kentucky by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his wife, U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, multiple sources said.

McConnell, who is also scheduled to speak at the ceremony, shepherded both men’s nominations through the Senate, despite fierce opposition.
