Azar’s Diabetes Day Hypocrisy

Health Secretary Alex Azar oversaw massive hikes in the prices of drugs used to manage diabetes as a top drug company executive

WASHINGTON – Today, on World Diabetes Day, while the Health Department has spoken out in support of people with diabetes, Secretary Alex Azar has himself thus far remained silent. But with Azar’s history overseeing huge hikes in the price of insulin during his tenure as a top Eli Lilly executive, that’s no surprise. Restore Public Trust released the following statement in response:

“The insulin price hikes at Eli Lilly under Alex Azar would make any statement from him on World Diabetes Day ring hollow,” said Lizzy Price, director of Restore Public Trust. “Under Azar, Lilly raised the price of insulin by four hundred fifty percent above inflation. It’s no wonder Azar and President Trump have utterly failed to lower the cost of medications for sick Americans — they’re Big Pharma loyalists.”

During Azar’s time at Eli Lilly, the company raised the price of insulin by a staggering 450% above inflation, and increased the cost of the Diabetes medication Humalog by 345%.
